Touch ID (Fingerprint/ID scanner)
The most notable new feature of the new iPhone is the fingerprint/ID scanner built within its home button. This can be used to unlock the phone and download apps instead of using a password. It is capable of scanning your finger in any orientation. There is currently no information as to whether it is compatible with other 3rd party apps like Facebook, Twitter and other login required apps.
Camera
The camera has finally been paired with dual LED flash. One LED produces cool colours while the other produces warm colours. The purpose of this is to tackle the issue of inaccurate colours which a lot of camera phones struggle to do. The camera module has been slightly improved to produce better quality images over the already great camera on the iPhone 5. Instead of having Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) like the Lumia range and HTC One to reduce shaky photos, Apple have opted for digital image stabilization which doesn't quite compare theoretically but should help somewhat. The camera viewfinder has been altered to fit the design ethos that Apple has chosen for iOS7 with an addition of some new features and filters. The resolution still stands at 8MP which isn't majorly good or bad. The competition are stepping up to 13MP and even 41MP for one but the 8MP shooter in the iPhone 5S will most likely hold up.
iOS7
The latest release of iOS 7 was announced too and will be available to download on the 18th of September. Here is a feature rundown:
The user interface (appearance) has been completely overhauled with brighter colours, flat design and less chrome. The font has been kept the same for readability sake but Apple have included the option for bolder fonts. Siri has had an upgrade too. 'She' can now be a 'he' if you wanted a more masculine sounding phone (for whatever reason that may be). |
Battery and signal readings are made to look more clear. Usability is largely the same with some gesture additions that allow you to move back and forth within an app using edge to edge gestures. A swipe gesture from the bottom of the display brings up the Control centre toggles for quick access to frequently used settings, music player, favorite apps and sharing options (All as shown below) |
Colours
This year Apple is doing something unique with its colour offerings by having an additional Gold model to the line up. This really enforces that the iPhone isn't just a phone but also a jewelry like accessory.
What's new on the inside?
The iPhone 5S has a new A7 chip (processor) powering it. This brings a significant performance boost to games and the such but won't have much of an affect on the running of the iOS7 thanks to it being already quick. This is where it all gets technical. The processor will be based on the same architecture of chips found within some laptops and desktop computers, specifically: 64-bit. This means that that apps will be able to take advantage of a larger feature set if developers wish to. Accompanying the A7 chip is the M7 which is also called the "motion co-processor". This secondary processor is tasked with measuring the accelerometer, compass, and gyroscope continuously with fitness apps in mind. Battery life has been improved by the A7 chip with the help of a larger capacity battery (disclosed by Apple).
